Does Printer Migrator extend the Microsoft schema?
No.
Does the software extend the Novell schema?
No.
Do I have to install the Printer Migrator client?
No. Simply run the PPPClient.exe from a login script. You do not need to install it.
Can I also have the Printer Migrator client convert iPrint printers to the associated AD printers?
Yes. After migrating or mapping the printers from eDiretory to Active Directory, simply select the “convert iPrint printers” option in the Printer Migrator, Admin_Options menu.
Can I migrate iPrint Profile settings? Yes!
Description: Customer spent endless hours creating iPrint Profiles so that the duplex option and tray settings would be set on iPrint printers when they were installed to the end user. Now they are migrating to Active Directory and don't want to have to go through all the printers and set those settings again. Oh please make it do it automagically like the rest of the printer migration!
Solution:
In PPPAdmin - Migrator, select the Admin Options menu and check the "Require Novell Printers to be installed locally to copy printer preferences from when creating the AD printer" option.
Now install the iPrint printers to the same machine that is running the Printer Migrator.
Migrate the printers by selecting the source iPrint printer and target AD server
The AD printers will be created with the settings from the iPrint profile and the PPPClient.exe will migrate the old iPrint printers to the new AD printers with the same settings that the iPrint Profile had.
Is that cool or what? We think so.
Does Printer Migrator write to eDirectory?
No. Only reads edirectory.
How long will it take to migrate 250 printers from eDirectory to Active Directory?
About an hour. Set it up and start it…Take lunch…You’re done.
What Novell printer types does Printer Migrator support?
NDPS / iPrint. Please contact support@printerpropertiespro.com if you would like support for queue based printers.
What are the system requirements to run Printer Migrator?
Machine in the Active Directory domain
Novell Client installed (with NDPS)
Supports all windows operating systems 2000 and up (including Windows 7/2008)
Can I unmigrate a printer after I migrate it?
Yes. Right click select “unmigrate”.
Will Printer Migrator work with a Microsoft cluster?
Yes. Simply select the virtual server as the target server. Remember to enable Kerberos authentication on the name resource.
Will Printer Migrator work if I have a Novell Cluster?
Yes.
Can I use Migrator to create direct TCP/IP printers on end-user machines, instead of migrating to a print server?
Yes! Simply choose "Installer Application - Direct IP Printers" as the target of your migrations instead of a print
server. You do not need to purchase PPP Installer to use this feature, but all the printers will be created in PPP
Installer's respository as well, so they could be managed easily using the PPP Installer tool if desired. For information on why you may want to use direct TCP/IP printers instead of a print server, see our knowledge base article.
Why does the migrator keep asking me for new drivers? Doesn't it automatically use drivers from my NDPS/iPrint Repository?
The migrator will access and use the drivers from your repository whenever possible. However, when migrating to a
print server that is running an operating system newer than Vista, most older drivers from your repository will not
function correctly, and you may be asked to supply a suitable driver. You can fine tune how the software picks drivers for you in the "Driver Selection..." dialog under "Admin Options". You can also migrate to direct TCP/IP printers, which are installed locally on end-user machines, and generally do not need additional drivers. Used in combination with PPP Installer, you can easily create and manage
locally installed Direct TCP/IP printers that can have fine tuned drivers and configuration settings without needing a print server at all. See our see our knowledge base article for a comparison.
Why do end-user computers report that there was no driver available from the print server when they connect to a printer?
This occurs when the print server does not have any drivers installed that are appropriate for the end-user's
operating system. Sometimes this can easily be fixed just by installing an additional driver on the print server,
sometimes there can be complications. The most common issue is that windows print servers currently only have one
driver slot for XP, Vista, 2003, and Windows 7 drivers. Which means in some instances, there may not be a single
driver package that you can use for all those operating systems. Some manufacturers have generic drivers that will
work for most of their printers on most operating systems, but many do not. Sometimes it simply may not be possible
to share some models to all the different end-user operating systems. In these cases, you may need to contact the
manufacturer for any known work arounds. Alternatively, PPP Migrator can be used in conjunction with PPP Installer,
to install direct TCP/IP Printers which have much finer control over drivers, configurations, and other OS
compatibility issues. See our knowledge base article for more information.
Why don't my printing defaults get pushed out to end-users when they connect to a migrated printer?
This has to do with how Windows itself handles drivers and configurations. Often times, if the print server is a
different operating system than the end user connecting, the end user will be unable to properly read the default
preferences, sometimes the device settings will not function either. The only solution is to find drivers for the
different operating systems that are compatible with each other. Some manufacturers have generic drivers which will
usually meet this need, for other drivers you may need to contact the manufacturer for workarounds, if there are any.
The PPP Installer application can be used to push out configurations on a per-operating system basis which can be used
to get around this problem. As well, PPP Installer can be used to create local direct tcp/ip printers, which can
circumvent the print server all together. See our knowledge base article for more information.
Can I map printers from edirectory to printers in Active Directory without migrating the printers from edirectory to Active Directory, so that when the PPPClient.exe runs it will convert the Novell printers to my Active Directory printers?
Yes. Simply click on the printer agent in eDirectory and click on the target PRINTER in Active Directory and click the arrow in between.
I manually created all my printers in Active Directory so I don’t need to migrate them from eDirectory. Can I associate the printers in eDirectory to printers in Active Directory and simply have the PPPClient.exe convert the Novell printers to the associated Active Directory printer?
Yes. Simply click on the printer agent in eDirectory and click on the target PRINTER in Active Directory and click the arrow in between.
