FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What Operating System languages does PPP support?
While PPP is written only in English, it will run on and we support the following OS languages:
English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, *Japanese, *Slovenian.
If your language is not listed here and you would like to use PPP, email technical support and we will add support for your language without charge.
Note: if your language is not supported, you will receive an error from PPPAdmin starting with "OS Language Restraints...".
*version 7 only.
Does PPP store any information in eDirectory or modify the schema?
No. Printer Properties Pro queries eDirectory only, and stores all the configuration files within the install directory.
Can I use PPP to create or modify NDPS Printer, Manager or Broker objects?
No. Printer Properties Pro queries eDirectory only, and stores all the configuration files within the install directory.
Does PPP run any NLM's on the server?
No. PPP has two pieces: PPPAdmin, which runs on a workstation and allows administrators to create configurations, and PPPClient, which also runs on a workstation and applies configurations to installed printers.
How do I make the PPPClient show the end-user what it is doing?
In PPPAdmin, click Client_Options, and check the Show Client Window On Workstations option.
Can I hide the PPPClient dialogue window on the workstations so the users do not see it?
Yes. In the Client_Options menu, uncheck the "Show Client Window on Workstations.
After I configure the settings for a printer with PPPAdmin, how do I deploy them to workstations on the network?
Run the PPPClient.exe on the workstations from the PPP installation directory.
Do I have to install anything on the workstations to make PPP work?
No. PPPClient was designed to run as a stand-alone executable on the workstation, to avoid the complexities of client installation. Simply run PPPClient.exe from a login script or NAL object.
Example:
Can I start PPPClient with a NAL object?
Yes. PPPClient can be started like any other Windows application.
Where should I install PPP?
Install PPP to a directory on the network. This directory does not need to be on a NetWare server, but it must be accessible to users that will create configurations and to users that will receive configurations.
Does PPP push or install printers to the workstations?
No, PPP configures the printer driver properties after the printers have been installed on the workstations. Use NDPS or any other method to install the printers.
How do I use multiple configurations for the same printer and the same operating system?
Example: I want the marketing staff to print from tray 2 and the sales staff to print from tray 4, and they all have Windows XP installed.
Create two NDPS printer agents for the same physical printer. Associate the marketing staff with one printer and the sales staff with the other. Then in PPP, configure the marketing and sales printers as you would any other printer.
Are there command line parameters for PPPClient.exe?
Yes. For a full list of command line parameters and their descriptions, see the Technical Documents
Do I need to change anything in PPP if I update a printer driver in the NDPS Broker?
Yes. If you upload a new or different driver to the NDPS broker, the PPP configuration for that printer must be deleted and recreated under the new driver. If the old configuration is deployed to the new driver, the driver could become corrupt and would need to be reinstalled.
How do I remove or delete a configuration from PPP?
Select the NDPS or iPrint printer on the left and click the red X on the right for the operating system configuration you want to delete.
How do I recover licenses used on printers that I don't need anymore?
When you enable a printer for NDPS or for iPrint, a license is used. To add that license back to the pool of available licenses, you must select the printer in PPPAdmin and clear the configuration, using the red minus sign.
How do I recover a license for a printer I deleted or renamed?
Use the Printer Validation Tool found in PPPAdmin under the Tools menu. This utility will validate your configured printers against NDS, and allow you to clear configurations for old printers that are no longer found in NDS. This action will free up a license for each printer cleared.
What local machine privileges does an end-user need for PPP to configure the printers?
PPP can be used to configure your clients' printers no matter what local privileges they have. However, if the local user account has only "User" privileges, you will need to start PPPClient on the workstation using an alternative method (see next item).
How can I use PPP when the end-users log into Windows with only "User" privileges?
Users with only "User" privileges in Windows cannot configure the printers. To use PPP to configure the printers for these users, you will need to create a Zenworks NAL object that starts PPPClient as an unsecure system user. The effect of this is that PPPClient is started by the System account in Windows, rather than the logged-in user. The System account can change printer properties regardless of the privileges of the logged-in user.
What if I need to change my tree name, or move PPP to another tree?
Your current license will only work in the tree for which it was created. If you need to change your tree name, or move your license to another tree, please contact us at sales@printerpropertiespro.com.
What ports does PPPClient.exe use to read information and copy configurations?
Just the normal NetWare Core Protocol (NCP Port:524). This is the port that the Novell Client uses for simple file access. If the end users can access the folder on the server that contains PPPClient.exe, then that is all that needs to be open.
Where are the configuration stored? Will PPPAdmin.exe show me the settings I have previously configured for a printer?
The configurations are stored in a folder in the directory where you unzipped PPP. PPPAdmin.exe will show you the configuration you stored previously when you click on the "Configure Printer Properties" button. If you change the settings you will be given the option to save the new settings.
How much memory does the PPPClient.exe use?
The PPPClient.exe is about 500k in size.
How much memory will the install of PPP require?
About 5MB + 20k for each configured printer. Remember the install in on a server and the end users only run the small PPPClient.exe from the server.
What are the support hours?
Business hours are M-F 9-5 MST. We often exceed the normal business hours and support our customers M-F 6am-10pm.
How often does PPPClient.exe check the install folder for changes to the configurations?
By default every 10 minutes (can be configured to never check or check as often as you would like). When it checks it is comparing a single configuration time stamp to see if anything has changed and only when a change has been made will it re-read the small configuration file (configuration file size is about 314bytes per printer, 100 printers =31k, this is nominal traffic on a network).
System Requirements
Novell NDPS/iPrint: PPP integrates with Novell’s NDPS and iPrint printing solutions
Novell NDS/eDirectory: PPP supports all versions
Windows 9X/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista: Both PPPAdmin and PPPClient run on these versions of Windows
Novell Client: PPP supports all versions of the Novell client, but we recommend always using the latest version
Rights: PPPAdmin users (you the network administrator) need read and write rights to the file system where you install it. PPPClient users (end-users) need only read rights to that same location.
Hardware: PPP was designed to consume as little system resources as possible. PPP Administrator Install = 5MB base + 20k per printer. PPPClient.exe about 500k
